Just released for this winter, is our fantastic Combi style winter ripstop canvas paddock rug. All of the features of our regular range, with the addition of a full length neck cover attached permanently to the rug.
Following on from the success of our unlined ripstop canvas paddock rug which has worked so well during the last year, we have taken this idea a step further and included the neck attachment on our full winter paddock range. The neck cover is unlined (except for a nylon mane protector), to prevent unnecessary weight on the horse's neck and eliminate overheating which is so detrimental to the manes of many horses. Because the neck cover moves less than a conventional neck rug (ie, no sliding up or down), your horse's mane is far less likely to rub or fall out.
Fastenings on the neck cover are plastic fast release buckles for ease of use. The unlined neck cover gives you the flexibility to use an under rug and neck rug when conditions permit, without overheating the horse. It is especially good over a polarfleece neck rug. On our heavier 21oz rugs (Terminator), the neck cover is made from a 16oz canvas.
So if you ALWAYS use a neck rug in the paddock in winter, you should give our Combi style winter rugs serious consideration when choosing your new winter rugs this season.

A note about winter rugs:
When purchasing a waterproof winter rug, it is preferable that you 'season' the rug before its first use. This will ensure that the stitching swells to fill the stitch holes, and so prevent leaking during the first wet period. It is not essential that this is done, but it is preferable, as otherwise the rug may leak during its first exposure to rain, especially along the back seam.
We use a special thread on our waterproof rugs which has a nylon core with a cotton outer. This thread is designed specifically for horse rugs as the cotton swells to fill the stitch holes.
To Season your rug:
Pick a sunny day if possible, and either put the rug on the horse, or hang it on a fence or clothesline. Using a hose set to spray, thoroughly wet the rug. Then using your hands, rub the water into the canvas. Allow to dry thoroughly, in the sun if possible, then for best results, repeat the treatment.
The canvas fabric will also swell along all the seams as well as the thread. Your rug should now be fully waterproof and should stay that way for several seasons.
Reproofing:
Your rugs should last for two winters before reproofiing is necessary. The canvas we use is a cotton polyester blend and is very tough. Although it is probably not necessary, after two or three seasons we recommend that you reproof your Allambie Horse Wear rug. This will ensure that the rug does not absorb too much water when it rains, which will mean that the rug will not get heavy on the horse's back.
To reproof, use any commercially available rug waterproofing compound available from your saddlery. Make sure you use one for cotton or cotton blend canvases.
